I shipped a multi-currency expense tracker. Solo Dev, React Native, RevenueCat for billing, localized for 20 languages.

For months I kept polishing the UI and adding features I was sure were great. Then it hit me: the app is obvious and easy to use **for me** \- because I built it. Other people open it for the first time and have no clue how it works. And on mobile you have seconds to grab someone's attention before they're gone.

At that point I had zero in-app analytics. Three subscribers, two already cancelled, one still active. I felt completely blind. I didn't even know how many users created a wallet, or whether anyone had ever logged a single transaction.

So I started with the obvious thing first: a proper onboarding flow. Better visuals, more explanation, paywall at the end. Shipped it. But I still had no way to tell if any of it actually worked. Next decision: add analytics. After some research I went with PostHog.

A few days of data was enough.

The biggest drop in the funnel was at the paywall step inside onboarding. Users were going through the slides, hitting the paywall, and just closing the app. It hit me - of course they were. I was asking for money before they had even created their first wallet.

Two changes went out in the latest release:

1. **Removed the paywall from onboarding.** Less pressure, lower bar to entry.
2. **Added a 3-task checklist on the home screen:** create your first wallet, log your first transaction, and (optionally) set up a budget. I made the third one optional on purpose - I know users are lazy, I am too, and I didn't want to annoy people with mandatory steps.

The new data already looks different. Users are going through all the onboarding slides. They're ticking off tasks. Small win, but it's the first time I've actually **seen** progress instead of guessing at it.

The main thing I'd tell my last-year self:

>Add analytics on day one. Without them you're blind, and blindly shipping features is a bad strategy - you'll spend weeks building the wrong thing because you have no signal on what's actually broken.

If you want to check it out, I'd genuinely love your feedback. No account required, your data stays on your phone — [https://walletee.app/](https://walletee.app/)

Excited to see what the analytics show for new users on this build.

Without analytics, I'd still be guessing why nobody pays for my app
