What do horses think when they are being ridden by humans?

Amado they obey humans because they are afraid, or do they accept their fate to be human ‘s pet/companion or do they tolerate humans because they k ow that humans give them food ?
They are after all much more powerful than humans and don’t necessarily need to obey our commands.
Somewhat of a stupid question, but curious.
