PG owner changing deposit terms after move-in — receipt shows different duration. What are my rights?
Hi, I need advice on a PG deposit issue in India.
I joined a PG on 16 March 2026. At the time, I was told my security deposit would be adjusted in May. My receipt also has a handwritten note stating the duration as “16 March to 30 May.”
Now the owner is refusing to adjust the deposit and says it can only be returned/adjusted after 11 months, pointing to a printed clause on the receipt. This was never clearly explained when I joined.
Questions:
Does the handwritten duration override the printed 11-month clause?
Can the owner enforce this if it wasn’t clearly agreed?
What can I realistically do to get my deposit adjusted or refunded?
Thanks in advance.
Btw this is the generic statement printed on bottom of the receipt:
“Booking advance is non-refundable. Two months’ security shall be returned after completion of the full term, i.e., 11 months. Rent is chargeable from 1st to 31st basis.”
But on type right it is handwritten on receipt that my duration is 16 march to 30 may !!
