Get the call right.
The Wemby glazing era has begun. He’s a Monstar come to wreak havoc on Bugs, Daffy, and Mike. But even in Space Jam, goaltending existed.
The NFL adopted an “oops, never mind” with replay assistance. Tennis players and equipment got so good, in or out was impossible for the human eye to see. Umpires long having a “pitcher’s strike zone” or some other agenda are now gone with the dodo using ABS. Now, NBA? You get one shot, one opportunity. Don’t let it slip. Sweaty palms on the iPad. Challenge? No challenge? Hurry, get the ball in! Wait, I gotta tie my shoes (again). What are we doing? What’s going on here? (Thank you SNL for that stim)
Every foul that would be considered “hard” in other generations, is always reviewed and most often an upgraded flagrant. These upgrades often lead to the flailing, unethical ball we see today. But, what about the most important subject: final score. No, not interested, hard pass. Wemby’s comp is Shaq when it comes to how he is refereed. These crews have never had to worry about shots getting swatted so close to the rim before at this volume because no one has had a wingspan like this before. If the league doesn’t want to fall behind other sports, the integrity of the game has to matter. Find the technology that senses ball to backboard to block. In a game that was a wide-open 3 from changing victors, it never should have been that close.
