A joint research team from Georgia Tech and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology developed a mathematical model that predicts how female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes locate and approach human targets, after observing hundreds of mosquitoes and analyzing approximately 20 million individual data points in a controlled laboratory environment. The findings, published on March 18, 2026, in the peer-reviewed journal Science Advances, provide the first detailed visualization of mosquito flight behavior and its underlying decision-making rules. The study was conducted using 3D infrared cameras inside a controlled chamber, with a human subject wearing varying combinations of black and white clothing while carbon dioxide levels were manipulated across three distinct experimental conditions.

The data revealed that mosquitoes do not follow each other to a target but instead independently respond to the same environmental cues, arriving at the same location simultaneously. The combination of a dark visual target and elevated carbon dioxide proved to be the most powerful attractor, causing mosquitoes to gather in large numbers, remain in the area, and attempt to feed, while either cue presented in isolation produced significantly weaker responses. The largest concentration of insects consistently clustered around the head and shoulders of the human subject, which aligns with the known feeding preferences of the Aedes aegypti species.

The research team also developed an interactive public website allowing users to simulate mosquito behavior across various environmental conditions, including adjustable color targets and carbon dioxide levels. The authors suggest that current suction trap pest control methods, which rely on continuous and steady environmental cues, may be less effective than intermittent activation strategies that better mimic the on-off nature of real human signals. Mosquito-borne diseases including malaria, yellow fever, and Zika collectively account for more than 700,000 deaths annually, giving these findings direct relevance to global public health efforts.
