What actually makes a great Act 3 in a screenplay?

DISCUSSION

Hey everyone,

I’ve been studying structure a lot lately (Save the Cat, traditional 3-act, etc.), and I feel like Act 1 and Act 2 get discussed all the time but to me Act 3 is where things either land or completely fall apart.

So I’m curious:

What do you think makes an Act 3 truly work?

Is it:
- A strong, satisfying payoff to setups earlier in the story?
- The emotional resolution of the protagonist’s internal arc?
- A clever twist or reveal?
- Escalation of stakes in the final confrontation? OR
- Something else entirely?

Also, what ruins an Act 3 for you?

(For me, it’s when the ending feels disconnected from the rest of the story or solves things too conveniently.)

Would love to hear examples of Act 3s you think are done really well and why they stick the landing.

Appreciate any insight!!
