Trying to monetize a micro-saas is actually a nightmare right now
built a little discord utility bot over the last few weekends. nothing crazy, it just runs some custom image filters for server emotes. People actually started using it and asking for premium features, so I figured I'd add a small paywall. like 50 cents or a dollar for a batch of generationS
Went to set up stripe and immediately remembered why I hate consumer payments. the 30 cent fixed fee plus the percentage basically eats the entire transaction. it literally costs me money to accept a 50 cent payment. traditional fiat rails are just completely hostile to indie devs trying to build cheap tools
Im seriously considering just ripping out the traditional payment gateway and setting up a crypto tipping model instead. I was scrolling through the bonk coin twitter earlier just looking at how they integrate social tipping across different platforms, and the friction is practically zero compared to what I'm trying to build. No merchant accounts, no rolling reserves, no kyc hoops to jump through just to receive literal pennies from users.
it just sucks that we have all these amazing frameworks to build the actual products in a weekend, but the second you try to accept a dollar for your work the banking system treats you like a high risk enterprise. anyone else dealing with this for low-ticket side projects? might just keep it free and run it at a loss until the server costs get too high idk.
