This game is a morality test
The scene:
In the solo queue for Dire Marsh, trying to complete a long multi-stage contract. Emphasis on 'trying'.
I was just about done for the day, and was dragging my soggy robot ass all the way from Bio-research to Quarantine. I snuck my way past the spot where I got sniped by some Thief on a roof and into the lab, through a vent grate.
As I get in, I hear footsteps, and then a voice on proximity chat: 'Hey man, I'm just here to complete a contract, we cool?'.
It was another Thief, hiding in the corner. 'Same here, no worries', I say, as I walk over to the science device and turn it on. 'Cool', the Thief says, and turns their back to me.
I look long and hard at the 'With SIMbiont active, defeat a hostile Runner' requirement in my contract log as I inject the SIMbiont, and look at the Thief's back as they loot a container.
And then I leave.
I think to myself as I crawl back through the vent, 'Sure I could have gotten that done right then and there, but then I'd be the same kind of asshole that's interrupted all of my contracts over the years. I'll walk out of here with my head held high, and restore that other guy's faith in humanity a little bit'.
And as I leave the vent, I am immediately blasted in the face by a completely different Thief, who silently finishes me off and crawls off into the vent to go and murder my new friend.
This game, like Old Testament God, is not subtle in delivering its moral messages to its subjects.
