College junior pov 2026
Hi r/Accounting, I wanted to ask and see if you guys feel like I’m on track for someone my age (20). I’m wrapping up my Junior year. I’ll be 21 at spring graduation, and with enough cpa credits to eventually take the tests with just a bachelors, I’m personally reflecting on my academic year and gauging my success.
Internship
I started applying to local internships last September, and got a seventeen dollar internship (not a high cost area) dealing with the Trucking industry, which is not my passion but I think it’s necessary to get experience any way possible. As far as I know I’m just doing really basic AP stuff, if that. Some of the employees in their mid - late 20s started as interns doing what I do, so I think they have sympathy for me.
Even though they extended me for the summer, full time, I feel like I haven’t made a great impression. For visualization, I’m short, skinny, and white as hell, Fyi, I’m also almost definitely on the spectrum, so I think learning office life is challenging, even if the employees /dudes with CPAs are chill, luckily the other intern cares much less than me. I manage. I just try to look a little more impressive than the other intern because I’m the guy staying, with no higher paying job for the summer, unlike my guy. I feel like I’m decent friends with him though. We’re on good terms.
They have been telling me my role will be expanding, but I think the training is waiting until I work full time (summer) to expand itself. It’s quite boring. I reply to a few emails a day, push through (half-AI automated) enough invoices before I get tired, and serve as an overall auxiliary to the older employees.
When I write it down it’s not so bad, but it just feels in the moment like agony sometimes. I’m seeing my psychiatrist next week but I feel like I might have undiagnosed ADHD. People used to tell me to my face I was too hyper. Now I feel like that manifests in an inability to build effective study habits. But I also give myself some grace because a 20 hour work week + 15 credits isn’t what I’m used to.
Overall, the internship has been worth it because my program requires one to graduate. So I’m just thankful in I’m good standing at school.
School
I’ve spent less focus on my academics and more on university life than ever. Now that I commute I guess, I’ve stopped taking college age for granted. I joined a frat on campus lol. Its a smaller chapter I imagine compared to usual Greek life, 50ish guys, joined halfway through junior year lol but they roped me up into being the VP of finance. So I collect dues. Which I think will be utter hell in the fall. But yolo whatever I’m happy to do it. In 20 years of my life this is the first irl leadership I’ve been. Is this good for the resume too? Even if no, I feel like I can relate people much easier than before.
I got two A’s in gimme classes, but might make B+ in my two accounting classes. I have a 3.75 from the fall. It’s just been hard to have the motivation to prepare for classes, you know? I feel like GPA is a super easy to use to exclude people from job openings. Even if I think it’s bullshit it’s the system I was born to operate in.
TL;DR
If the worst happens, I go down to a 3.7, which is perfectly fine. But I’m wondering if there are other things I need to be doing as a candidate to maximize myself, or maximize my growth as a young person. I’m now the finance bro of a 50 person frat chapter (there are legit really nice guys here)and have an accounting internship on my resume now. As they say, am I cooked?
