Looking for endoscopic discectomy advice before moving abroad
Hi everyone,
I’m 17 years old and I’ve been dealing with a massive L5-S1 disc extrusion for the past 3 months. In just the last week, things got pretty serious.
The pain in my leg is intense, but the most worrying part is that I now have a motor deficit. I can’t do a single-leg heel raise on my right side anymore; my calf just won't contract enough to lift my body. I can still walk, but I can't run and my gait feels "off" because my foot keeps dropping.
I saw my doctor today and he was very clear: because of the nerve compression and the loss of strength, surgery (endoscopic microdiscectomy) is the best option to avoid permanent nerve damage. Physical therapy alone won't fix this because the nerve is physically being crushed.
Here is my dilemma:
1. I have my final exams (Bac) in early June.
2. I’m moving to France for university in August.
I’m planning to get the surgery right after my exams in mid-June. That gives me about 6 weeks (1.5 months) for recovery and physical therapy before I have to fly out and start my new life as a student.
I have a few questions for those who’ve been through this:
• For those who had an endoscopic discectomy, did the sciatic pain disappear immediately after waking up?
• How long did it take for your calf strength/motor deficit to come back?
• Is 1.5 months enough time for PT before moving abroad and being active (walking to classes, etc.)?
• Any tips for surviving the exams while waiting for surgery?
Thanks for the help!
