Cortisone shot questions

I just got a cortisone shot for a mild shoulder injury after the orthopedist looked at my mri. He said I shouldn’t need surgery and I’ve been going to PT for the last 5 months before this with little improvement. How much did cortisone shots improve things for those of you who have had them and how long did it work for? Have you ended up needing to get surgery after?
