41F, Kolkata. Complete ACL tear + L5-S1 disc extrusion. 7 weeks of doctors, MRIs, and what nobody told me. Full timeline with reports. Starting this community so others don't get blindsided."
Hey everyone.
I'm starting this community because when I was lying in bed unable to straighten my leg, I couldn't find a single place where someone had laid out the full picture honestly — not just "I had ACL surgery" but the actual week-by-week chaos of getting there.
WHO I AM
41 years old, female, Kolkata. Not an athlete. Just slipped and fell on 12th March 2026. And my entire life changed in about 3 seconds.
WEEK 1–2: The first doctor. The first mistake I almost made.
Right after the fall I went to Dr. Utpal Bandyopadhyay at Welcare Medical Centre, Kolkata. His compounder (B Grade) drained fluid from my knee, putting me in a knee immobilizer.
X-Ray results
Left Knee: Mild degenerative changes. Joint spaces normal. No bony injury on X-ray.
Lumbar Spine: Mild posterior slipping of L5 vertebra. Reduced disc space at L5-S1. Spondylotic changes noted.
What the X-ray missed: Everything soft tissue. ACL. Disc extrusion. Bone bruising. X-rays don't show any of this. I didn't know that then. Surprisingly he saw the plate before draining the blood but didn't ask me to go for an MRI.
WEEK 3: Second doctor. We went to him because Gemini and Claude AI told me to get a ln MRI and no lab will do an MRI if I don't get a prescription. So we spent 1200, my husband ran to the hospital twice one to book the slot one to take me there as he didn't wanted me to wait there and struggle on a wheel chair .
We saw Dr. Somesh Deb, CK Birla Hospitals/CMRI (28 March 2026)
He looked at the X-rays and my presentation and said the words:
"Post traumatic pain, left knee, with instability. LBD with radiculopathy, lower limb."
Translation: My knee is unstable (meaning ligament gone), AND my lower back is pressing on nerves going down my leg.
My husband literally begged the doctor to write the MRI for my lower back. He wasn't going to. I kept saying something is wrong with my spine. Something is pressing. He finally wrote it. Almost like a favour.
That "favour" showed an 8.5mm canal compression at L5-S1. Disc extruded. Not bulging. Extruded. Meaning it came out and migrated downward. Pressing on bilateral nerve roots.
If I / he hadn't pushed. That would have stayed invisible.
The knee MRI was even worse. Complete ACL tear. Femoral end. PCL buckling because the ACL is gone and there's nothing holding the joint in place anymore. Bone bruising on three bones. Femur. Tibia. Fibula. Fluid in three separate places inside the joint.
The radiologist's impression used the word "complete."
I read that word about seven times. My husband has small droplets of water on the corner of his eyes.
WEEK 4: The MRI. The full picture. The real enemy.
Vijaya Diagnostic Centre MRI, 8 April 2026.
Two MRIs same day — left knee and lumbar spine. 2 hours and we did a bone density too. my husband was standing two hours straight to hear the dang dang noise outside the MRI and was praying ( I know he did ) that Allah she should not have any thing bad . Sabh thik kardena.
Left Knee MRI findings:
Complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament — femoral end, with retraction of fibres
PCL buckling (secondary sign of ACL failure — the PCL bends because the ACL is gone)
Bone contusions: femur, tibia, AND fibula — meaning the bones smashed together on impact
Moderate joint effusion — fluid in three separate bursae (suprapatellar, infrapatellar, semimembranosus)
Meniscus: no tear (this was good news)
Collateral ligaments: intact (more good news)
Quad tendon insertion: intact
Impression: Complete ACL tear + PCL buckling + multiple bone contusions + moderate effusion.
Lumbar Spine MRI findings:
Disc desiccation at L2-L3, L4-L5 and L5-S1 (discs are drying out — this is long-term wear)
L4-L5: disc bulge with posterocentral protrusion causing compression on thecal sac and nerve roots
L5-S1: disc bulge with posterocentral EXTRUSION and inferior migration — moderate compression on thecal sac, neural foraminal narrowing, bilateral nerve root compression
Spinal canal at L5-S1: 8.5mm (severely reduced)
Cervical spine (C3-C7): multiple levels of disc bulge also noted
Impression: Lumbar spondylosis with PIVD at L2-L3, L4-L5 and L5-S1.
Nobody explained to me at that point that the L5-S1 compression was switching off the muscles in my injured leg. I had to research that myself later. Oh by the way my research team is Gemini and Claude. They are my employees whom I pay one via Jio and another per month 2k just to satisfy my questions and curiosity during the whole time I am awake. ( Paid not because we are rich but if I see the chat box says out of messages and I won't be able to know the thing now I need another nexito to suppress my anxiety now ).
WEEK 5: The surgeon. The surgery plan. The medication list.
Dr. Ayan Ray, CK Birla Hospitals/CMRI — Consultant Orthopaedics (approximately 16 April 2026)
He confirmed the ACL tear from MRI, ordered bilateral standing X-rays (AP + lateral) to check joint space under weight, and prescribed:
Resner Plus
½ tab at 8PM
20 days
Etova ER600
After lunch
10 days
Rablet 40
Before lunch
10 days
CartiKool
After breakfast
3 months
Myotop SR450
After dinner
12 days
His handwritten notes also said: Warm compress. Physio — IFT to lower back, knee exercises. Will need arthroscopy. See 2 weeks. Use crepe + short knee brace.
The word "arthroscopy" was now officially in writing.
We purchased and I consumed these medicines three rounds nothing happened .
WEEK 7: The body said STOP. Severe allergic reaction.
Before the surgery could even be scheduled, my immune system collapsed.
27 April 2026 — I broke out in severe hives, full body. Angioedema. Couldn't sit in a waiting room. Did a teleconsult Tata 1MG with Dr. Capt Dharmender Kumar (Pankh Multispecialty, Delhi).
Diagnosis: Chronic urticaria flare-up, possible immune reaction.
Emergency treatment: IV Hydrocortisone 100mg (slow IV) + Avil injection 8-hourly.
The surgery had to wait. My body had overruled every doctor's schedule.
This is actually the most important lesson I have learned so far: Your body will tell you when it is not ready for a table. Listen to it louder than any surgeon's calendar.
What happened between after 13th April and before the Infection was Physiotherapy.
Then physio started.
There are two of them. I don't know if they talk to each other. Doesn't seem like it.
One only does IFT to my lower back the Hospital Doctor referred. That's it. My tendonitis in my right arm. Completely ignored. Every single session. Okay a few sessions, I fired him ( forgot his name someone under JP in CMRI) Told my husband not comfortable with a guy sliping pads inside my glute.
We got frustrated and we started hunting physiotherapy ppl from just dial from late night to early morning .
We got another one Neha Shaw
She puts TENS on both knees. Both. Left knee has a torn ACL and bone bruising. Right knee has been carrying my entire body weight since March because I can't put pressure on the left one. They are not the same problem. They are not getting the same treatment. But they're getting the same machine. Same settings probably.
I haven't asked. I'm afraid of the answer.
The hinge brace I bought to keep my leg straight. It slides down my leg every twenty minutes. I'm constantly pulling it back up. While holding a walking stick. Which hurts my right arm. Which has tendonitis. Which the physio is ignoring.
The surgeon says arthroscopy. That word is now in writing. On his letterhead. CK Birla.
Before that happens I need a "quiet knee." No swelling. Full extension. Quad muscle working.
Right now my quad is partially switched off. This is a real thing. It's called arthrogenic muscle inhibition. The fluid in the joint sends a distress signal up the spine and the brain just. Turns the muscle down. Like a dimmer switch.
And my L5-S1 disc is pressing on the same nerve roots that run that muscle.
So my knee is fighting my spine. And my spine is winning.
I'm not posting this for sympathy.
I'm posting this because when I was searching at 1am with my leg propped on two pillows I could not find one person who laid this out straight.
Everyone posts after. After surgery. After recovery. Six months later with a progress photo.
Nobody posts during. When you're in it. When you don't know if the physio is helping or just billing. When you bought a brace that doesn't stay up. When your walking stick hurts the arm you're leaning on.
This is during.
If you're also during. Pull up a chair.
