My manager is an alcoholic, managing a nonalcoholic bar.

Location: Florida

So I’ve been working at a nonalcoholic bar for almost 10 months now where we sell Kava, kratom, delta products etc. and ive enjoyed working there since I started and have had no real issues with my position.

(I also want to say I apologize if my story telling isn’t great, I’ve only posted to Reddit once but I feel the urge to seek help through someone so this is a bit of a desperation thing)

That is until my manager stepped in around February. For identity sakes we’ll call them Bob. Bob has been an interesting case to me since they stepped in. I’ve always had the feeling they were a bad person but I opened up to them when they came in. They’ve had a history of working at alcoholic bars in the past ( more on that later ) and I was skeptical if it was a good idea to hire someone who knows nothing about our products let alone the community surrounding it but I didn’t let my judgement on them change until I saw something with my own eyes. (Spoiler, they did ALOT)

So for some context, my manager often spends the night at our bar after we close. They say they prefer to do inventory and scheduling and such after hours when no one’s at the bar. At some point Bob started bringing in a friend of theirs into the bar during those hours, albeit the friend wouldn’t stay the night too but rather just keep Bob company. One night I was closing as Bob showed up with said friend around an hour before we close, nothing unusual. Keep in mind Bob had scheduled me to close and then open the store (6 hour gap between those two times) so I asked if I could leave early so I got more than 5 hours of sleep. Bob said yes and I leave. Next morning I come in and we have a meeting and when we arrive it turns out we had been burglarized during the night when no one was at the bar. We watched the footage and roughly 20 minutes after Bob and friend left, we see a hooded figure break in through our back door, and b line it for our office where we keep our safe. Keep in mind where our safe is kept was not common knowledge, only known by select regulars and our employees. So as soon as we saw them take the safe we knew it had to be someone who was knowledgeable of the bars layout, cameras, and best entry point. Police arrive and interrogate essentially all the staff, especially myself and my manager. As we were the last two in the bar… except for bobs friend. Turns out bobs friend was the one who burglarized us. And when the police searched them they found exactly half of the amount in the safe on their person. Bob was “devastated” causing a scene, thus provoking all following events.

Ever since this incident my manager has been acting… “strange”. To summarize some things, we had a car meet planned for our location with supposedly over 200 cars coming. No one showed up. Bob had scheduled all bartenders for this event as it was supposed to be hectic, but since no one showed, bob stayed in the corner of the bar talking to no one. The night before I was bombarded over text for not doing things the way Bob had asked but without going into too much detail, the things Bob had asked for were physically impossible. So I tried messaging that we could prepare for the meet in a different way which was possible and I was basically threatened over text that there will be consequences if I don’t do what I’m told.

Over the next few weeks, Bob progressively got more and more rude, specifically towards me. Undermining achievements I made for the bar, any tasks i completed even though I’m the only one doing them and so on. Till the point where I was criticized in our work groupchat when I did virtually nothing wrong. So I messaged back saying that “it’s not fair that I’m getting picked on when no one else does their tasks but I get nitpicked about 1 or 2 tasks I missed all month”

A week later my manager sits me down and has a conversation with me and tells me I’m being written up. Though not for anything I said, but for serving a drink to someone under 21. To which I asked who I served and who said I gave them anything? Bob simply said they can’t tell me those details, so I then asked if everyone else who served them is getting written up, to which Bob said no. After this incident I basically just became the ideal worker, doing all my tasks no matter the situation, clocking in and out exactly when I’m scheduled, and so on. But over this time I’ve been collecting evidence to hopefully get rid of my manager.

To start off, I still haven’t addressed the title. My manager often sleeps at work, like a lot. Often falling asleep on our couches, in their office, even on the outside patio. We have found several wine bottles and shooters in our dumpsters and trash cans as well as hidden around the bar. We all know Bob drinks, but we can’t prove it as Bob has revoked any way for us as employees to see the cameras. Bob has also brought in several friends of theirs as customers who end up saying our drinks are stupid and that they’d rather just drink beer.

Bob also has had a track record of breaking the law. Bob has no license, but drives to work. Bob worked at several bars which closed down due to corruption inside the bar where employees were stealing money and alcohol. Bob is also an awful spouse. Remember the whole getting burglarized thing? Well when bobs spouse showed up during the investigation, when police arrested bobs friend you could clearly see the look in bobs spouses eyes that they knew something was up. Even going as far as to say Bob had something to do with it. This was also followed by the fact that there were suspicions that bob was sleeping with said friend. Tracing that back to other information, we have found out bob is sleeping with one of our regulars. This wouldn’t be as big of a deal if it wasn’t for the fact that one of them is now pregnant. This info hasn’t been said explicitly by Bob but was found out through other means. To which after finding out said information, I was informed by Bob that their spouse is kicking them out because they found out Bob is dealing with cancer. Now I may not know how some people look at their spouse having cancer. But who in their right mind would kick out their spouse when they find out they have cancer? It just doesn’t make sense to me. Either way, it’s just more to the pot.

Bob has always been shady with money as well, usually taking various amounts out of our drawer saying they need to buy groceries for the bar or new appliances or decorations and such. Often leaving the workers with less than $100 to use for change for our customers. Bob also often adjusts my timesheets, but with how our app works I can’t see what they changed only the after results which often shows me clocking in exactly on time (I usually clock in 1-5 minutes early to help out) and clocking out when I’m scheduled to (I often end up having to stay longer than my scheduled time as I close and the scheduled time is only 30 minutes after we close).

Bob has belittled us in our work groupchat, written me up without proof or any documentation to show with it, actively brought in alcoholics as well as drinking at the bar, had sexual relations with customers, as well as even banning regulars who did nothing wrong besides dislike Bob. I know I didn’t get every exact detail let alone all of the things Bob has done but it’s just some things I feel need to be talked about because it’s insane Bob has been our manager for this long with no consequences. If this post gets any attention or I have anyone comment more questions I’ll be happy to answer but I’m truly looking for help on what to do. I tried reaching out to our regional manager and when I expressed all of these things it was so much they ended up just quitting. I hope I made sense and like I said I apologize for any bad storytelling.
