Carl the Collector Podcast for Adults
Clearly, Carl the Collector has struck a chord with adults, not just children. (I should know, because my gateway to the show was leaving it on for my 14-year-old chihuahua, Crusty, and I was hooked by the music, art style, and characters' down-to-earth problem-solving skills. I spoke with Zach and the Eraserhood duo about this last year.)
Now, I'm launching a Carl the Collector podcast. This is my mission:
This podcast is about translating the art, philosophy, and joy of the PBS Kids show, Carl the Collector, primarily for neurotypical adults (but not exclusively). On it, you will hear adult superfan Roddy leading conversations about specific episodes, production techniques, and more, building the case for Carl the Collector as a bingeworthy series for all kinds of audiences. Guests will also share something about their own personal collection(s). You should listen if you are a millennial adult in a new stage of life who’s tired of chasing nostalgia but still seeking warmth and comfort in your media diet.
These are ideas for the first few episodes (not including episode-specific deep-dives):
- Episode 1: The Hope Collection: How a childless adult discovers Carl the Collector, a wholesome PBS Kids show that gave him faith in 21st-century cartoons and media
- Episode 2: The Sound Spectrum Collection: Why Carl the Collector’s “synth and soul” soundtrack deserves to be immortalized in wax
- Episode 3: The Programming Collection: Why I choose free human-curated programming feeds over paid choose-what-you-want streaming platforms
- Episode 4: The Public Media Collection: Why the ethos and funding model of PBS matter in 2026, and how they appeal to Americans of all political persuasions
- Episode 5: The Autism Collection: Why uplifting and building connections with neurodiverse friends benefits you, them, and society
Before I proceed with production, I'm very interested in hearing from other Carl superfans to make sure this podcast makes a meaningful impact — for Carl the Collector fans everywhere, and for the would-be fans who just don't know about it yet. Please respond with any enthusiasm, critique, or suggestions for this! If you need a prompt, consider responding to these questions:
- How did you discover Carl the Collector? Why does it appeal to you?
- What podcast(s) do you already enjoy? What is it about them that draws you in?
