4 YOE Senior Full-Stack Engineer — what should I focus on for 30+ LPA Senior/Tech lead roles?

I’m currently working as a Senior Full-Stack Engineer at 12 LPA in a tech startup and have 4 years of experience.

I’ve been wondering whether it’s realistically possible to switch into Senior Engineer / Tech Lead roles paying above 30 LPA in the current market.

I’m a bit confused about where to focus next:

  • Should I go deeper into AI?
  • Or are strong DSA + System Design skills still enough for these roles?

If AI is becoming mandatory, how deep is “deep enough” for someone targeting Senior Engineer / Tech Lead positions?

My current experience is mostly around backend, frontend services, infra and leading projects.

I’ve also built a few basic MCP integrations (like OpenAPI MCPs), but I wouldn’t say I have deep AI expertise as an AI engineer. I’m honestly not fully sure what companies expect someone transitioning from a traditional full-stack/backend role into AI-focused engineering to actually know.

Would appreciate advice from people who recently made similar switches or are currently hiring for Senior Engineer / Tech Lead roles.
