Offered job → gave notice → now told I need FAA Public Trust… timeline confusion?

Question

Hey everyone, I could really use some insight here because I’m pretty confused about what’s going on.

Here’s my situation:

- I was offered a job with a start date in about two weeks, and I accepted
- I already passed their employment verification, degree check, and drug screening
- Based on that, I put in my two weeks’ notice at my current job
- Then the new employer came back and said I need to complete an FAA background check

I asked the recruiter for more details, and they said it’s for a Public Trust and “should take up to two weeks.”

This is where I’m confused…

From what I’ve seen online, Public Trust investigations can take months, especially if there’s any kind of review involved. I do have a clean background:
- No criminal history
- Just some recent international travel (visiting family in Africa)
- I’m also a dual citizen

That said, I previously went through a Secret clearance process back in 2019, and it took months because of my dual citizenship. So now I’m a bit concerned history might repeat itself.

What’s throwing me off is:
- The job req originally said no clearance required
- I wasn’t expecting any kind of background process beyond what I already completed
- I’ve already given notice at my current job

Another concern I have (and honestly this is stressing me out):
If this Public Trust process ends up taking longer than expected or turns into a full investigation, I might be stuck in a really awkward position where I’d have to go back to my current employer and ask if I can take back my notice or extend my time. That’s obviously not a great look, and I’d really like to avoid that situation if possible.

Now I’m worried:
- If this turns into a longer investigation, could my start date get pushed back?
- Could the offer be rescinded if it drags out?
- Or is there a lower-level Public Trust that really can be completed in ~2 weeks?

Has anyone gone through an FAA Public Trust (or similar) that moved this quickly? What kind of investigation would fit that timeline?

Trying to figure out what I should realistically expect here. Appreciate any insight.
