Do you have to attend a career fair?

I recently applied for an internship and already had a screening call with one of the recruiters. Today I received a somewhat generic email/invitation to one of their student/junior career fairs.

I’m wondering if not attending could negatively impact my chances of getting the internship, or if these events are usually just optional networking opportunities.

Has anyone been in a similar situation?
