In medieval society, what is the day to day life of an alchemist like?

What were the normal daily routines of this profession? Also, did the profession exist outside of royal courts, institutions or wealthy patronages? What I mean is were there "freelance" or village alchemists that you might go to for an herbal remedy or metallurgical task?
