Cut close friend off

Support

I ended a 5-year friendship recently and I honestly don’t know what I’m feeling anymore besides anger and exhaustion.

I was there for this person through some really difficult times and gave a lot of emotional, mental, and financial support because I genuinely cared about him. Over time, though, the friendship became incredibly draining. He would snap at me, dismiss my feelings, and make me feel like I was “too negative” whenever I opened up about my own stress.

Lately I’ve been overwhelmed with work, financial pressure, family responsibilities, and other personal issues, and instead of feeling supported, I felt criticized and emotionally shut down.

A few days ago, things finally boiled over. I blocked him and left our group chat because I was tired of the entire dynamic. Then I found out he blocked me through his kennel’s Facebook page lol.. it’s ridiculous but upset me more than I expected. I think it’s because after years of friendship, this is what it came down to: blocking each other instead of having an actual conversation to try and fix things.

What’s messing with me most is that I have many other close male friends and I’ve never had this kind of toxic, emotionally exhausting friendship with anyone else before.

Part of me is angry at him, part of me is angry at myself for tolerating so much for so long, and part of me just feels emotionally drained by the whole thing. I’ll get over it soon. And I hope he realizes what he lost.
