Digestive enzymes causing pain
Hi all, I've been battling SIBO for over a decade (and honestly, that's for another post) but I wanted to hop on and ask if anyone else has had issues with digestive enzymes?
I'm currently working with a functional practitioner and she has me on Digest Gold, to be eaten at the end of meals with my very last bite of food. Three meals a day (so three capsules), no snacking in between. They were fine for the first couple of weeks then I started to get immense pain. Usually an hour or so after I ate a meal. At first I thought it was because I accidentally took a capsule 25 mins after my last bite of food as I was not at home at the time (was down the street at a restaurant and forgot my enzymes, so took one as soon as I walked home), and what followed was immense *aching* pain. Not my usual SIBO intestinal gas-expansion pain, but a dull aching that had me laid up in bed for 2-3 hours, unrelenting, horrible. It was hard to take enzymes again after that incident.
She told me to empty the capsules so I'm only taking a 3rd of one with each meal and work my way up. So I started doing that, then stuck with half capsules for a month. I was then feeling like they weren't doing what they needed to do as I was getting MORE gas post-meals (meals that usually wouldn't give me gas). I had thought the enzyme amount I was taking was just not enough to digest everything (silly thought). So I started taking full capsules again with each meal. Within 48 hours of going back to full capsules the same pain is back, to a lesser degree. Dull aching pain, with a little gas, shows up an hour or so after I eat a meal. Now I need to go back down to half-capsules or maybe stop....
I did some searching on this sub and I found one person that said if digestive enzymes cause issues it's because of leaky gut. So now I'm thinking I need to address this (something I've tried to do multiple times over the years). I'm surprised my functional practitioner didn't start with this. She wanted to get my MMM going and increase gastric emptying/motility. I honestly don't think the regimen has been helping, as she also told me to reduce a TON of vegetables as she said most vegetal matter is the cause of SIBO gas. So I've struggled to get enough veggies.
I honestly felt a lot better and had my SIBO managed (def not cured) when I was eating a whole lot more veggies. Reducing the amount and kinds of vegetables I'm eating (and also not each fermented anything per her instructions) and instead using digestive enzymes feels like it's made everything worse and I'm having gas pain episodes a lot worse overall.
I'm seeking insight as to why enzymes might not work for some people with SIBO...
