I don’t think people realize what parental separation does to children psychologically

I genuinely don’t think people understand how much it hurts children to be denied a real relationship with one parent and an entire side of their family.

Children build their identity through both parents and extended families. When one side is removed, they don’t just lose a parent they lose grandparents, cousins, traditions, memories, and part of their sense of belonging. Psychology and attachment theory both show this can lead to anxiety, abandonment issues, trust problems, and identity struggles later in life.

Kids should never feel like loving one parent is betraying the other.

What’s especially heartbreaking is that after enough time passes, the damaged relationship caused by separation often gets used as justification to continue the distance, even though the bond weakened because it was interrupted in the first place.

Healthy co-parenting should never be about “winning.” It should be about protecting a child’s right to love and be loved by both sides of their family whenever it’s safe to do so.
