I have a GPA of 3.1 with no research or MCAT score, but 12,000 hours of clinical hours. Where do I go from here?
Hey everyone, I wanted some honest opinions on my med school situation because I’m trying to figure out how realistic MD vs DO is for me.
I graduated with around a 3.6 science/math GPA during undergrad, but after graduation I enrolled in another course while working full-time and ended up not finishing it. Unfortunately, it counted into my cumulative GPA and dropped me down to around a 3.1 overall GPA.
Since then, I’ve continued working in ophthalmology and currently have over 12,000 clinical hours, mostly in a retina clinic. I’ve worked closely with physicians and patients for years and medicine is still what I genuinely want to pursue.
Right now, my plan is:
Take 1 upper-level science course and get an A
Study heavily for the MCAT (goal is ideally 518+, but realistically maybe somewhere in the 510–520 range depending on how prep goes)
Start volunteering outside of medicine as well (free clinics/community outreach/homeless or food pantry work)
Try to get involved in some ophthalmology research part-time
I know my GPA is the biggest weakness in my app. I’m trying to figure out if:
MD is still realistic with a strong MCAT and my clinical background
If I should apply broadly MD + DO
If I should delay further and do more GPA repair first
I’d appreciate honest feedback from people who’ve applied, current med students, admissions insight, etc. I’m okay hearing hard truths — I just want realistic guidance on how competitive I actually am and what would give me the best shot.
Thanks everyone
