How thick are the glass covers on most fire alarms?

Whenever I look at the glass that covers the strobe on the fire alarms at school (and basically all fire alarms), they always look like they're made out of plastic for some reason, and I also for whatever reason think they're very hot when the alarms go off. Not a professional, but I'd like to be proven wrong about those 2 things.
