Plastic-free clothing.
Hey everyone, I’ve lived in the GTA (Toronto) for about 5 years now and I’m currently working on a project that could really use some "reality-check" feedback from this community.
I’ve been researching about microplastics in our clothes and realized that even "100% cotton" basics usually aren't actually plastic-free. Almost every shirt uses polyester sewing thread, and underwear always has spandex/elastane elastics. It means we’re still shedding microplastics in the wash and having synthetic materials against our skin all day.
I’m looking into launching a small line of truly 100% microplastic-free clothes(T-shirts and underwear) that use:
• GOTS Certified Organic Cotton.
• 100% Cotton sewing thread (no polyester core).
• Natural rubber elastics wrapped in cotton (no spandex).
I'm planning to source these directly from a sustainable hub in India to keep them high-quality but semi-affordable (aiming for ~$40-45 for a premium tee).
I’m not selling anything yet—just trying to see if I’m solving a real problem or if I’m totally overthinking the details. A few questions for the community:
• Is "100% Microplastic-free" a high enough priority for you to switch brands, or is "Microplastic free with few plastic" just usually enough?
• Would you pay a ~10-15% premium to ensure there is zero synthetic thread/elastic in your clothes?
• What’s the one thing that usually stops you from buying "sustainable" brands?
Thanks for any insights!
