Suggestions for a synth or midi to mess around with?

In a couple of months I'm moving into a dorm and I kind of wanted to get a small synth or midi that I could mess around that I can use headphones with. I was thinking about getting the akai mpk but I'm not really sure if that's the best product for me since I'm not too into the dap side of things. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives?
