The Hadeeth of Al-Jassasah: The Encounter with the Antichrist

This narration is recorded in **Sahih Muslim** (Book 52, Hadith 110). It tells the story of Tamim al-Dari, a sailor who was lost at sea for 30 days before stumbling upon a mysterious island.

### **1. The Arrival and the Beast**

* **The Journey:** Tamim al-Dari and 30 men from the tribes of Lakhm and Judham were tossed by waves for a month. At sunset, they reached an island.

* **The Creature:** They were met by a creature so hairy they couldn’t tell its front from its back.

* **The Name:** The creature identified itself as **"Al-Jassasah"** (The Spy/The Information Gatherer).

* **The Direction:** It refused to answer questions and told them: *"O people, go to this man in the monastery, for he is very eager to know about you."*

### **2. The Prisoner in the Monastery**

* **The Appearance:** Inside the monastery, they found a man of huge stature.

* **The Restraint:** He was shackled heavily. His hands were tied to his neck, and iron chains bound his knees to his ankles.

* **The Exchange:** The prisoner began asking the sailors specific questions about the state of the world to see if his time to escape was near.

### **3. The Five Signs**

The prisoner asked about five specific things, which the sailors confirmed:

  1. **The Date-Palms of Baisan:** He asked if they still bore fruit. They said **yes**. (He said they soon wouldn't).

  2. **The Lake of Tiberias (Sea of Galilee):** He asked if it still had water. They said **yes**. (He said it would soon go dry).

  3. **The Spring of Zughar:** He asked if it still flowed for irrigation. They said **yes**.

  4. **The Unlettered Prophet:** He asked if the Prophet had appeared in Arabia. They said **yes**, he had emerged and migrated to Medina.

  5. **The Response of the Arabs:** He asked if the Arabs fought him. They said they did, and the Prophet eventually prevailed.

### **4. The Identity Revealed**

Upon hearing that the Prophet had appeared and the dates were still growing, the man revealed his identity:

> **"I am the Masih (the False Messiah/Dajjal). I will soon be permitted to leave. I will emerge and travel throughout the earth for forty days, and I will not leave any town without entering it, except for Mecca and Medina. They are both forbidden to me."**

>

### **Arabic Reference Snippet (for authenticity):**

> "فَإِذَا فِيهِ أَعْظَمُ إِنْسَانٍ رَأَيْنَاهُ قَطُّ خَلْقًا، وَأَشَدُّهُ وِثَاقًا"

> *(...There we found the largest human being we had ever seen, bound most strongly...)*

>

**Summary for your post:** After Tamim al-Dari returned and converted to Islam, he told this story to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). The Prophet then gathered the people in the mosque and told them that Tamim’s account matched exactly what he had been telling his companions about the Dajjal and his eventual emergence.
