Transmogs in Other Games: Should WoW Change?
This is my first ever Reddit post. I don't know how this place works. Hello!
I'm making this post after a long spiel in SWTOR and only recently coming back to WoW due to loving Midnight's aesthetic, the Transmog menu changes & Housing, and I have to say:
I personally think the WoW transmogrification system restricting to class-specific gear... kind of sucks?
This might be a beaten-to-death discussion, but I dunno. I'm not active in Reddit. If this is, just throw tomatoes at me and call me a chud, but...
Fret not. I've come with my reasons why and a proposal that I think would genuinely be healthy if not fun for WoW. I'm going to be heavily comparing to SWTOR's system, and before anyone goes; "BUT OP!!! SWTOR'S OUTFIT/TMOG SYSTEM IS HEAVILY MICROTRANSACTIONAL!!", I will say, you are absolutely correct. Most of the good-looking outfits are locked behind Cartel Market and occasional events and it costs real money (or millions/billions of credits on a very inflated auction house economy) to look good in SWTOR, not to mention the dye system, color crystals for guns/lightsabers, etc. However, I want to focus on one specific system that Activision created and Broadsword continued (which, I'm saying 'created', but I don't know if the system is theirs), which is Adaptive Armor.
To bypass the blockade of class-specific armor for outfits - thus limiting what you can or can't wear, SWTOR insteads has a specific class of armor that is made for 2 things: serving as adaptive gear that you can upgrade to max iLVL by using augments (equivallent to gems/enchants in WoW), or, putting them in your outfit slots to create outfits. Now, I personally believe that this would be fucking awesome for WoW. In SWTOR, it allows for interesting combinations; play a Sith Warrior but you really fuck with Mandalorians? Cool! Wear some Mandalorian armor and get a vibrosword, and boom, you're decked like a mando warrior despite being a Sith mechanically. It allows for greater expression and creativity with outfits and allows a class to look like something else for the purpose of LARP or actual roleplaying.
"But wont this impact PVP/Content? What if a hunter looks like a mage, how am I supposed to cope?"
There's already 1 trillion addons that tell you someone's class by the color of their health bar or literally an icon, so this is a non issue.
Another system that SWTOR has which literally curbstomps WoW's transmog system and its a mystery to me why Blizzard has never tried to emulate is the Unify Colors button in the Outfit Designer. A simple button that takes the main color scheme of your chest piece (usually the largest on an outfit, usually), and applies it to your entire outfit. It's so simple, yet so desperately needed in WoW. Nothing more frustrating than your shoulderpads being a slight tinge of gold different than your chest piece (looking at you, South Guard trading post set).
Anyway. TL;DR: Why is the transmog system so dogshit when other MMOs are great examples of a good system?
Thanks for reading my first reddit post. It was probably ass. I love you all.
