I built a TikTok-style app for learning
I’ve been working on a side project for the past few months and just launched it: DeepSwipe
The idea is simple:
Take your short form video scrolling habit and turn it into something productive with very little friction - I give you a swipeable feed of short, engaging stories pulled from Wikipedia: history, science, space, weird facts, etc
Each “swipe” is like:
- a 30–60 sec mini story
- with animated visuals + narration
- and it adapts to what you seem interested in
The goal was to make learning feel as addictive as scrolling TikTok.
I personally find the idea compelling and I’ve gotten positive feedback from those I’ve shown it to in person. However getting even a single download from anyone else is proving brutally difficult and I’m not entirely sure how to proceed.. I’ve been trying to do content marketing on instagram and TikTok, with the latter being more successful in terms of views and followers (somewhat surprisingly to me!) but got essentially zero conversions from this. It really doesn’t help that these platforms don’t let you add links to the video caption itself, and TikTok doesn’t allow a link in your profile even.. Users have to be very motivated to search out the app by themselves.
The app is free for iPhone and Android so if anyone would be willing to try it and give honest feedback I’d be very grateful!
My intuition is that the visual part is very important; I’ve definitely found it challenging to automate the process of obtaining images with the right license, that are relevant to the content, AND visually engaging, especially for certain topics (historical topics, abstract topics like mathematics). If I can get some more traction, I want to invest more time into this part, and expand the image databases I’m using, e.g. library of congress for historical images, NASA for space images etc.
