Who is Thorston, and why does he suddenly live with me?

A guy called Thorston has moved into my Heljarchen Hall. He turned up one day and now he hangs around, mostly chopping wood or enjoying the view. None of his dialogue gives me any clue as to where he came from - it's mostly "And what might you need, hmm?"
