what are the odds my bank refunds me?

Victim of a scam

Someone hacked a legitimate account from the college I take classes at (I’m a 17 year old high school senior who dual enrolls) and mass emailed everyone pretending to be a professor selling equipment from her recently deceased husband for cheap if we contact a number. I legitimately thought it was the professor, contacted the number, and it was early in the morning (5am) when I did this and they replied so I was half asleep when I was responding, and I made the decision to Zelle this person $300 to a random gmail under the premise that they would mail me a camera. (Stupid as fuck, I know, please bear with me)

Immediately after I did it my senses kicked in and I woke up and I realized ‘this doesn’t feel right’ and I figured it was a scam. I immediately called my bank the moment they opened and told them what happened, and they said they will begin an investigation but because Zelle immediately transfers the money there’s no way they can get it back. On my account the transaction says ‘processing’ so I tried to see if they could do anything to stop it before it posted, but apparently the money already sent.

I’ve been looking into cases like this and apparently the scammers can get away with it because the purchase was authorized even if I didn’t receive what I authorized the purchase for. I had no idea Zelle was for trusted family and friends only, vendors in my community use it all the time for transactions.

I don’t need the lecture on how stupid it was for me to do this, I’m used to making online purchases all the time and stuff like this has never happened, and the one time I let my guard down something happens. I have been raised in an environment where people are constantly warning me about the dangers of phishing and the importance of reading emails thoroughly and cybersecurity, but you could be taught to look out for something so many times and still miss it.

What are the odds that my bank refunds me? What should I do next? I’m planning on filing a police report and hoping for the best.
