Is the Pietà a reference to the Aeneid?

I was reading in my introduction to the Aeneid how the motif of Aeneas carrying his father on his back is a famous depiction of the Roman virtue of pietas. Could medieval artists be referencing Vergil intentionally? Or is it just happenstance?
