• The coveted "Christmas #1" has existed since the UK charts began in 1952, and Cliff Richard has had three in his career: one with his group the Shadows in 1960, one in 1990, and his biggest one in 1988, a song that was originally written for a musical adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Match Girl. But after last round, the old has passed, and there's a new beginning...the logs on the fire have burned out, the gifts on the tree have been torn open, and the votes say it's time to rejoice in the song we don't see on the list anymore - it's time to kiss "Mistletoe and Wine" goodbye!
• In 1982, West Germany's entry in the Eurovision Song Contest was "Ein bisschen Frieden" (or "A Little Peace" in English), sung by Nicole Siebert, which would go on to become the first German-entered song to win the Eurovision contest. And while Eurovision has not fared well in this game in rounds past, this song of unity and love has outlasted all the other Eurovision winners in this game until now...but closing my eyes, I can see through the dark, the dream that is in so many voters' hearts - and just like a candle blown out in the wind, this song's dream of winning this contest has been weighed down by the load of votes!
• In 1963, Lesley Gore reached #1 in the US and #9 in the UK with perhaps her signature song, "It's My Party". And two decades later, Barbara Gaskin and Dave Stewart (no relation to the man of the same name from Eurythmics) reached #1 on the UK charts with a new wave-style cover of the ode to teenage heartbreak on a supposedly happy day. But now, just like the girl in the song, Dave and Barbara have no reason to smile, because the song at the top of this list will not be wearing their ring, and I guess they can cry if they want to - you would cry too, if they voted for you!
