Why Instagram growth plateaus after the first spike

Instagram growth after the first spike can feel brutal because the early win makes you think the machine has figured you out. Then the next posts land normally, reach drops, and suddenly you are wondering if you broke something. I think the first spike often comes from one post finding a temporary pocket of attention, not from the whole account becoming stronger overnight. The plateau usually shows up when there is no repeatable format, no clear profile promise, or the new viewers do not have enough reason to stay. A viral reel can introduce people to you, but it cannot build the whole relationship by itself. The account still needs a clear topic, recognizable voice, strong follow-up posts, and a reason for people to keep checking back. That first spike is useful, but it is not the strategy. What helped you get past the post-spike plateau?
