Meri’s need for a big house
At the end of season 4, when they’re trying to figure out their finances to buy the four lots in the cul-de-sac, there’s a huge focus on the size of Meri’s house. She argues that it would be unfair for her to have a smaller house just because she only has one child. I don’t want to sound insensitive, but at that point she was around 41–42 years old, Leon (Mariah) was already 17, and she had decided not to move forward with IVF. So it seemed like she had accepted that Leon would be her only child. What bothers me is that she often framed her infertility pain as justification for wanting a house just as large as the other wives’. I understand the emotional aspect of it, but financially it made no sense to me. The family was already struggling to afford the four lots, yet somehow accommodating Meri’s desire for a huge house became a priority. And when she says things like “I have more expensive taste”… okay, but why do you need 5+ bedrooms and a pool at the expense of other kids’ personal space? Meri would get bedrooms she wouldn’t use or need but Janelle’s teenager kids need to share a bedroom? Make it make sense. Wouldn’t it make more sense to base the house size on how many people are actually living there? It’s one pf the recurring issues in the family, the adults prioritize “fairness” between the wives and the ideal of polygamy over the actual well-being and practical needs of the kids. But well, the whole move to LV was a proof of that.
