If the leaks are real, Nintendo are releasing THREE remakes of classic games this year. Do you think Nintendo are relying too much on remakes in 2026?
The three remakes:
Star Fox 64 remake - confirmed for June release
Ocarina of Time remake - rumoured for holiday release, seems extremely likely now after Star Fox
Super Metroid remake - rumoured for second half of 2026, new 2D Metroid is not happening until 2027 or later
I have no problem with remakes existing, but releasing THREE in the span of 8 months seems a bit like overkill to me. What makes it worse is that two of these games already got remakes on the 3DS (both in 2011, funnily enough) so they are RE-remaking games that have already been remade.
IMHO, it seems like Nintendo are struggling to develop new games in a timely manner (see Tears of the Kingdom taking 6 years, Mario Kart World taking around 7 years, DK Bananza taking around 5 years, 3D Mario going a DECADE without a new game). These remakes are trying to fill in the gaps while being relatively "low-effort" and mostly being about visual enhancements with very limited gameplay changes.
Based on the rumours, it seems possible that the only NEW first-party Switch 2 games for the second half of the year will be Splatoon Raiders and Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave. (The Duskbloods is also supposedly coming, but lack of news makes me think it could be delayed).
