$350 on a resume coach, 73 applications, 0 callbacks ofc
let me save a few of you the same mistake i made.
last february i was 4 months into looking for work after being let go from my first job. nothing was landing. i'd sent maybe 70 applications and gotten one screening call that went nowhere. desperate, panicking, scrolling instagram at 2am, i clicked an ad for a "professional resume audit + 1-on-1 career coaching" package. $350 for what turned out to be a 30-minute generic call and a prettier version of my resume.
zero new callbacks. zero. i'd just funded someone else's dinner with my desperation.
the part nobody selling these services tells you: the actual work is hard and it's free. it's tailoring every single resume to every single job description. that's the whole game.
1. tailor every resume. not "kind of." actually do it.
i used to send the same file everywhere because tailoring 30 a week sounded impossible. it IS impossible if you do it badly. the version that works takes about 10 minutes per app, read the JD top to bottom, pull the 5-7 keywords or phrases they repeat, make sure those exact words appear in your summary line and skills section. nothing else has to change.
the first week i forced myself to do this on every application: 8 apps, 2 callbacks. before that i was 0 for 70.
2. reorder your bullets within each role.
recruiters don't read top to bottom, they skim. and almost everyone puts their strongest bullet at the BOTTOM of each role because chronologically that's where it lands.
i moved the bullet most relevant to each JD to the top of each role. didn't change the words. just the order. response rate roughly doubled on the next batch.
3. cover letters: 3 lines or skip them.
generic cover letter -> ~6% callback. no cover letter -> ~7% (basically the same). 3-line letter naming one specific thing from the JD -> ~14%.
three sentences. one about the role, one about why one thing in the JD matches you, one about what you'd want to do in the first 90 days. done.
the AI tools angle (because i tried a bunch)
after the $350 disaster i tried a bunch of AI resume tools. most just took my bullets and rewrote them to sound like… you know the type. "leveraged cross-functional synergies." "spearheaded transformative initiatives." felt the same as the $350 call, just cheaper.
i ended up building my own thing hirely.me honestly it started as a side project to stop me from wasting another $350. now it's the thing i'd hand my january self
for the first few people who comment send, i'll send a free month of Pro it will unlock interview prep, cold outreach, offer negotiation, ATS audit, plus unlimited resume tailor + cover letter on top of the free tier. would love some of you to try it
the part nobody wants to hear
if a service is charging $300+ and not telling you the work is just tailoring, every time, every application they're selling false hope to scared people. that $350 was the most expensive lesson of my job hunt. the lesson was: this IS the job for the next month. tailor or stay invisible.
happy to answer questions on any of the data above, or on what to actually look for in AI tools (some are decent, just buried under a lot of garbage).
