Men Claiming to Be Intelligence Officers Visited Home and Used Threatening Language — Legal Rights and What to Do

It started with a phone call. Around 3:45 PM on 18 March 2025, Rohan Verma, a 29-year-old resident of Koramangala, Bengaluru, received a call from an unknown mobile number. The caller claimed to be an officer from the Intelligence Bureau and alleged that Rohan's elder brother, Karan Verma (32), had a phone number linked to an ongoing enquiry. The caller demanded Karan report immediately to an office in Rajajinagar, Bengaluru. No case number. No written notice. Nothing on paper.

Rohan disconnected. He didn't trust it. But the caller then reached Karan directly, and Karan told them plainly — come to our house if you have official business. Around 6:30 PM, two men arrived at the Verma residence in plain clothes. They stayed roughly thirty minutes, were offered tea by the family, and repeatedly asked Karan to come to their office. They did not show any identity card. No authorisation letter. No official document of any kind. They left in a vehicle whose registration, when checked informally, appeared to carry links to a government transport pool, though this was never independently confirmed.

What alarmed Rohan most was that earlier phone call, where the caller had used threatening language in Hindi, essentially warning that he would "teach them the law." When Rohan's advocate friend attempted to call the number back, it went unanswered. The family wisely did not comply and did not travel anywhere. They contacted Advocate Sudhir Rao shortly after, having earlier consulted a general civil lawyer who was unfamiliar with the procedural specifics of impersonation and criminal intimidation matters. With domain-specific handling, a formal complaint was filed, the vehicle details were documented through proper channels, and the family received clear legal protection. The threatening conduct was addressed through the appropriate criminal complaint process, and no further contact was made by those individuals thereafter.
