North Country Blues and Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
Bob Dylan’s “North Country Blues“ and Gordon Lightfoot’s “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.” The vocal melodies are very close. The geographies are very close. The economics (the Great Lakes iron trade) are very close. That’s not a coincidence, is it? Are both songwriters borrowing from a preexisting Great Lakes folk tradition and this melody comes from there?
