is my boyfriend’s best friend provoking me?

i’ve hated this guy for a while now and the feeling is mutual. he has a history of cheating and he also crossed a major line with a friend of mine in the past (he basically forced himself on her and then claimed he "didn't know he had to ask for consent"). we don’t follow each other anymore and we never talk.

i was online playing a game and this random girl sent me a couple of invites. i didn't recognize the username, but i eventually joined the lobby to see what was up. she told me that her friend in the her stream/call said he knew me (and mentioned my name), and then she shared his "joke" of saying he followed me home. i was creeped out and kept asking who it was. we went on a whole back and forth as i didn’t recognize 3 nicknames she gave that he went by until i finally figured out it was the guy i dislike. i felt blindsided and uncomfortable, so i just said "oh!” “okay, bye" and left the lobby quickly.

i actually felt a bit bad because i think i sounded mean once i realized who it was, so i asked my boyfriend to ask his friend who the girl was. i just wanted to message her and say sorry for being abrupt and that i was just caught off guard. but when my boyfriend asked, the guy wouldn’t say, was vague, and said something along the lines of, "why are u so interested?"

the whole thing felt like a middle school setup. why have his friend invite me just to make me guess/know it was him? it felt like he was just trying to get a reaction out of me or mock me for his friends to see. i didn’t see a point in him letting his friend know/call me and making sure i knew he was the friend she was referring to.

am i tripping or was he trying to mess with me?
