Should I be guilty of this?
28 F. My husband and I have been married 2–3 years. His parents are divorced, and we live with my FIL. Me and husband used to visit my MIL every weekend, but during my pregnancy I stopped after 6 months because she lives on the 2nd floor with no lift. I asked her to visit me instead, but she barely came during the rest of my pregnancy, even after I moved to my parents house in the same city. My brother who was a special child was critically ill that time, nearly deathbed and I was struggling even then she didn’t visit.
After delivery, she hardly visited again, saying she couldn’t travel, even though she regularly uses Ola/Uber otherwise. Around that time she also remarried, then later had issues in that marriage and expected emotional support from me, but honestly I was overwhelmed with a newborn, my brother’s health, and my parents.
After I came back to our house Even then, I kept inviting her over every weekend for months so she could spend time with our daughter but she mostly never came. At a Diwali dinner, she accused me of “taking away her son” and complained that I don’t call her enough. She also told my husband he has changed because he no longer compliments her or behaves the same way.
We later had a family discussion with my husband, MIL, and BIL. I finally brought up how absent she had been during my pregnancy/postpartum, but she focused on how I didn’t support her during her failed remarriage. We agreed to “start fresh,” but nothing changed. Now she tells my husband I’m trying to break the family, while my husband actually distances himself because of his own issues with her.
The thing is: I genuinely never tried to separate them. I even encourage my husband to visit her. But now I constantly feel guilty and scared of having a mother’s “baddua” on my family.
