Travelling with hand sewing

Hi sewists!

I'm hoping to gauge peoples experiences travelling, specifically flying, with some hand sewing projects.

I'm due to fly from Brisbane Australia to Sydney Australia for my friends wedding and wanted to take a little hand sewing project.

The project is a few embroidered photos of

The bridesmaids with the bride for us to gift her inside a handwritten card. It entails using a pin or needle to poke holes in the photo and then use embroidery metallic thread to pass through the pre determined holes in fun patterns.

Can I take it in carry on and work on it during the flight? Or should I put it in my checked in bag?

I'm flying with Virgin Australia if anyone has any experience with them specifically.
