Most Shopify app ideas die not because of bad execution — because the niche is already saturated.

I spent time analyzing 18,626 Shopify apps and still growing and built MerchantGap to surface the gaps.

Every category gets scored across 4 signals:

* **Gap score** — composite of review density, satisfaction, and Built for Shopify penetration
* **Reviews/app** — low ratio means demand exists but supply is thin
* **Rating deflection** — categories rating below platform average = room for a better product
* **MRR ceiling** — estimated monthly revenue of the top app in the category, so you know real money exists before you build

Some interesting finds from the data:

* **Pre-orders**: only 82 apps, $1.9M MRR ceiling, gap score 56
* **Subscriptions**: 99 apps, $7.5M MRR ceiling, gap score 54
* **Cookie consent**: 52 apps, $1.4M MRR ceiling — barely anyone charging for it
