My psychologist assessment experience with Embrace Autism
I was really nervous going into my assessment after reading Reddit discussions about Embrace Autism, so I wanted to share my own experience because it ended up being very different from what I read.
My assessment was conducted by a licensed psychologist who was also autistic, and for me that made a huge difference. It was one of the first times I felt genuinely understood instead of feeling like I had to defend my experiences.
I also ended up using the post-diagnostic services afterward and had a positive experience there as well. The clinicians I interacted with through both the assessment and post-diagnostic services were psychologists, and that mattered to me personally when choosing where to go.
I was able to receive disability support documentation afterward, which was one of the things I had been worried about because of some of the things I had read online beforehand.
I’m not saying every single person will have the same experience anywhere, and I understand why people share criticism when they have concerns. But I do think some of the online discussions gave me the impression that the service was illegitimate or that psychologists were not involved, which was not my experience at all.
Honestly, I worry that some of the discourse may discourage autistic adults from pursuing accessible assessment or support altogether, especially people who already struggle with fear, self-doubt, burnout, or accessing care.
