How concerned should I be?
I made a similar post before but wanted to give more context of what’s happening now. I have a 14 month old who’s meeting all other milestones besides speech. Many moms have told me it’s nothing to be concerned about but he used to babble and then stopped when he started crawling. Has anyone here had a late babbler or intermittent babbler? Here’s some more context
Things he does well:
Makes good eye contact
Responds to his name
Loves interacting with people and animals
Laughs at social reactions (like if I gasp)
Claps and imitates clapping
Signs “more” when prompted
Brings me snacks and even tries to feed me
Brings toys to me for interaction (like pretending I’m “eating” it)
Understands simple things (like looking for objects when asked)
Seems socially engaged and enjoys back-and-forth games
Speech concerns:
Used to say “dadadada” around 10 months but stopped
Used to make an “eee” sound but stopped that too
Now rarely babbles
Mostly grunts or makes vocal play sounds
Sometimes only makes “baaa” very rarely
Often only vocalizes when something is near his mouth
Other behaviors I’ve noticed:
Occasionally bangs his head or scrunches his face when emotional, but can be redirected
Randomly looks at his hands sometimes
Fists his arms when excited or upset
Sometimes grunts repeatedly while playing alone
Recently started more vocal play again, but speech sounds are still very limited.
I guess I’m just trying not to feel alone. All of my friends with kids around his age already talk and we are in an early intervention program but they don’t do speech therapy until 18 months even though he’s clearly very delayed.
I guess I just want stories if you’ve been in a similar situation. Thank you
