Another hockey skate fit question. I’m thinking I got a bad fitting and I’m struggling to reconcile the idea of buying another pair of skates
Got back into hockey after 20 years off, needed to get new skates as my old Easton Synergy 900s (size 9D) disintegrated. I was fit into Bauer Vapor Fly40 size 9 fit 2. This was based on my fitter knowing my previous skate, and the scanner recommending a 9.5. I wear a US size 10 (usually converse, and they fit like a glove). The skates were very comfortable in the store, especially after baking. I probably have about 40 hours of skating/playing in them now and they just feel a bit clunky. My heel is locked in, at least, I don’t detect any movement and I’m not getting any hot spots or blisters… but I just don’t really feel like the skate is an extension of my foot. There’s definitely too much volume in the toe box— my toes no longer brush the toe cap when standing upright and I feel myself clawing the footbed with my toes when I’m on my edges. I tried the powerfoot toe cap inserts which helped a little (definitely increased the comfort), and I have Bauer custom insoles… but I still feel like I’d benefit from going down to an 8.5 or even an 8 (this also would shorten the length of the blade).
I’m mad at myself for not doing more research first, as apparently the old synergy size 9 is more comparable to a Bauer size 8-8.5… and now I’ve watched a bunch of videos that have me convinced the skates are too big.
Anyway, I guess I’m looking for someone to say either “suck it up and buy new skates” or, “you’re 40 and haven’t skated competitively in a long time, so just spend more time with them and if they’re not working for you by next season then do something.” I guess I’m concerned that I’m confusing rust/lack of skill with poor fitment. I just feel like a more snug skate and shorter blade would help my agility.
They felt super awkward at first (see my previous post) as I was getting used to the taller blade and longer radius… I think I’ve adjusted to that now, but I still feel like I’m tripping over my own skates in the corners more than I used to.
