Alright so, I adopted a maine coon female (spayed) kitten some 2 years ago. I raised her as an indoor cat in a same story apartment. My gf moved in eith me and convinced me last week to adopt a new kitten (male, 8 weeks old). I raised my first cat to be independent cause I work in healthcare and do nightshifts as well.

Last Saturday we adopted the little guy and he has been nothing but a bundle of joy. Playing and cuddling. We have him in a seperate room where he has his food, water, toys and litterbox.

My first cat spends a lot of time in front of the door laying there relaxed. However when we go in or out of the room she gets hissy. We are doing scent swapping and feeding treats near the door to associate positives with each other.

Sometimes however she goes against the door and just lays there looking at it. Sometimes for almost an hour. The resident cat does eat and play in the rest of the apartment and is now claiming me more than usual.

Sometimes we crack the door a little. The kitten stays calm but the resident cat stays low and hisses and growls. No fights have broken out but we are afraid we are doing something wrong or that the resident cat might not accept him at all.

Are we indeed doing something wrong or, do we need more patience? And what are the next steps?
