The condensation was thick on the windows of O’Malley’s in Newport Beach, blurring the Southern California sunset into a haze of neon and palm trees. Inside, the air was heavy with the scent of spilled Guinness and the low hum of Friday night regulars.

Lily and I were tucked into a corner booth, the kind with cracked red leather that’s seen a thousand secrets. At 23, she had a sharpness to her that made her seem older—a single mom’s grit masked by a flirtatious, playful energy. We’d always had a heavy, borderline-inappropriate rapport, constantly pushing the boundaries of "family" talk until the air between us felt thick.

"You're quiet tonight," I said, nudging her arm as the waitress dropped off two fresh pints. "Everything okay with the apartment? I know you were stressed about the rent."

Lily took a long, slow pull of her stout, wiped the foam from her upper lip with her tongue, and leaned in. Her eyes were bright, a predatory glint reflecting in the dim pub light.

"The rent’s handled," she whispered, her voice dropping to a smoky thrum. "But you’re going to think I’m a total brat."

I laughed, leaning in until our shoulders touched. Being her brother-in-law, I’d heard my fair share of her exploits, but I could tell this was different. "Lily, we’ve shared things that would make a priest quit. Tell me."

"I'm fucking my landlord," she blurted out. "His name is Mike. He’s in his late 40s—that silver-fox, heavy-set build. Salt and pepper hair, permanent five-o'clock shadow, and those thick, working-man forearms with the veins popping out. He looks like he could snap me in half."

She told me it started on a Tuesday while her daughter was at school. She’d been pacing her living room in nothing but a loose tank top and lace undies, enjoying the cross-breeze, when she realized Mike was on a ladder right outside her window fixing the shutter. Instead of hiding, she’d stood there, letting him look.

"He didn't even pretend to work," Lily said, her fingers tracing the rim of her glass with intense focus. "He just stared. So I walked to the window, leaned against the frame, and asked him if he wanted to come inside and check the 'plumbing' for a discount. He climbed down that ladder so fast I thought he'd break a rung."

She leaned closer, her breath smelling of malt and mischief, getting into the graphic details she knew always got a rise out of me.

"Last Tuesday was the best one yet. I was coming back from the hospital, still in those tight blue scrubs. He was 'trimming the hedges' right by my porch. I caught him staring at my ass, so I told him the kitchen sink was 'leaking' again. He followed me inside, and the second the door clicked shut, he had me pinned against it."

She took a breath, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "But here’s the thing—you know I’m still nursing. I’m always a little full, a little sensitive. Mike is obsessed with it. He calls it his 'landlord tax.' He sat me down on the counter and just started kneading my breasts through the scrubs until they started to leak. He spent twenty minutes just nursing, making these low growls like he’d never tasted anything so good. It’s a total power trip for him, and honestly? It turns me into a mess."

Lily’s face was flushed now, her pupils blown wide as she recalled the intimacy of it.

"I felt his rough palms slide up my thighs. He didn't even take the scrubs off; he just ripped the drawstring down, bunched the fabric, and entered me from behind while his hands were still up my shirt, squeezing. He’s so much bigger than the guys my age; he fills me up completely. Every time he hit the back of me, I felt a let-down. It was primal, totally animalistic."

She described how he locked his hands on her waist, driving into her while she watched the sunlight through the peephole of the door.

"And before he left? I made him a cup of coffee. He was sitting at the table, looking all smug, and I just stood there, pulled my top down, and expressed right into his mug. He didn't even blink—just took a long sip, looked me dead in the eye, and told me he’d take another hundred off the balance if I did that every time he came by."

She leaned back, her chest rising and falling quickly, and winked at me.

"So, yeah. My rent is basically non-existent, I don't have to worry about getting preggers because he’s snipped, and I’ve got a 48-year-old man addicted to my milk. Jealous?"

I took a long drink of my Guinness, my head spinning. "Lily, you're absolutely wild. I don't know how you keep a straight face when he comes over to actually fix things."

She laughed, a wicked, throaty sound, and clinked her glass against mine. "Who says I keep a straight face? Sometimes the best repairs happen when nothing is actually broken."
