The Mystery Box Chapter 2

The next morning, Alex woke up to the worst kind of ache: the flat cage had kept him in a state of low-level denial all night, every shift in bed turning into a frustrating reminder that nothing could get hard, nothing could escape. He grabbed his phone immediately, thumbs flying.

Alex: Britt, seriously, the key from last night? It's under your bed in that mess. Can I swing by quick this morning? Need to grab it before things get worse.

He stared at the screen for what felt like forever. No dots. No reply. He showered (awkwardly, carefully), ate breakfast like a zombie, and checked again. Still nothing.

Around 11 a.m., his phone finally buzzed.

Brittany: Morning sleepyhead! Missed your text yesterday. Lol key?? Oh right the mystery box cage thing πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I legit forgot about that. Mom came in super early and did a full clean on my room, said it was a biohazard. Vacuumed everything, threw out a bunch of junk. Idk if she found anything weird lol. Come over this afternoon? I'm heading to the mall with the girls soon but you can help me look before I bounce.

Alex's stomach twisted. Vacuumed. Thrown out. The key could be gone forever, sucked into the bag or tossed in the trash that got picked up this morning. He texted back frantically.

Alex: Wait, she vacuumed UNDER the bed? Like, the whole pile? That's where it went!

Brittany: Not sure. She was on a cleaning rampage. Said my room looked like a tornado hit it after we "hung out" lol. Sorry nerd! But seriously come over, I'll double-check before I leave. Promise. πŸ’•

He arrived at her house just after 1 p.m., nerves shot. Brittany answered the door in a tiny crop top and high-waisted denim shorts that hugged her curves, perky tits bouncing slightly as she pulled him into a quick hug. "Hey! You look stressed. Still locked up? That's kinda funny now that I think about it."

Alex winced at the casual reminder. "Yeah. Hilarious. Can we just... look?"

She led him upstairs. Her room was noticeably tidier, bed made, floor clear, no visible chaos. But under the bed? Alex dropped to his knees and peered in.

It was still a complete mess. She flopped onto the mattress, legs dangling off the side. "Go nuts. I already peeked, didn't see anything shiny, but whatever."

Alex dropped to his knees, hope pounding in his chest. He pulled out his phone flashlight and dove in. The pile was massive: old magazines, tangled earbuds, a dried-up makeup palette, random socks, a half-empty water bottle, crumpled gift bags, that vibrator from the mystery box, fuzzy cuffs still linked together, shredded packaging from who-knows-what online hauls, dusty notebooks, a stray bikini top... It went on and on. He'd gone through every layer methodically, heart sinking with each handful of junk that wasn't what he needed. He went deeper, almost lying flat, flashlight beam catching dust bunnies and forgotten lip gloss tubes. Still nothing.

After ten solid minutes of thorough searching, sweat on his forehead, arms aching, he sat back on his heels, defeated. "It's not here. Like... at all."

"Still nothing? Wow, it's really gone, huh?" She sounded more surprised than concerned, like they'd misplaced a hair tie instead of the only thing that could free him from twenty-four-plus hours of compressed, aching denial.

Brittany knelt beside him, close enough that her thigh pressed against his. She reached in too, groping around. "Maybe Mom vacuumed the key into the abyss. Or it got tangled in a sock and is now living its best life in the laundry hamper. Oops."

Alex stared at her. "Britt, this isn't a joke. I can't... I mean, it's been over a day. It hurts."

She pouted playfully. "Aw, poor baby. Okay, okay, I'll text Mom later and ask if she saw a tiny key thing. Relax. We'll find it eventually."

She sat up fully, stretching so her top strained. "But seriously, gotta jet soon. Mall calls. You can keep looking if you want, but don't make a bigger mess or Mom will kill me." She hopped off the bed, grabbed her purse, and paused at the door. "Text me if you strike gold."

With a wink, she bounced out, leaving Alex alone in the half-clean room, flashlight still in hand, staring at the remaining under-bed chaos.

He searched for another five minutes before giving up. Nothing. The key was either gone for good or hidden in some unreachable corner of the disaster zone.

Then he heard the sound of the front door opening and keys jingling.

"Hellooo? I'm home!" Vanessa's cheerful voice floated up the stairs, followed by the rustle of grocery bags.

Alex stood reluctantly, dusting off his knees, the flat cage shifting with that familiar, frustrating pressure and headed downstairs.

Downstairs, Vanessa was in the kitchen, wiping counters in yoga pants and a sports bra that strained heroically over her massive tits. She turned with a bright smile. "Alex! Good to see you again so soon. Britt said you were stopping by, good timing actually. I was just thinking about you." She set down a carton of orange juice and leaned against the counter, hips cocked casually. "After last night's movie and how cozy we all got on the couch... I couldn't stop smiling. So I pulled the trigger."

"On what?" he asked.

Vanessa's eyes sparkled. "The beach trip! I booked it this morning, a long weekend at Ocean Crest Resort. Three nights, ocean-view room with a pull-out sofa for Alex. We leave next Friday after school lets out early. Sun, waves, pool, maybe a little spa for me and Britt... It'll be perfect. I already texted your mom, she's thrilled. Said you could use some vitamin sea."

Alex froze in the doorway, mind reeling. A multi-day trip. Swimsuits. Shared hotel room probably. Bikinis. Sunscreen. Proximity. And him still locked in this damn flat cage, with the key possibly vacuumed into oblivion or who-knows-where.

"Uh... yeah. Sounds... great," he managed, voice thin.

"You excited, hon?"

He forced a smile that felt more like a grimace. "Yeah. Super excited. Thanks, Mrs. Larson."

Vanessa beamed, stepping closer to give him a warm, enveloping hug, her huge breasts pressing firmly against his chest for a long second. "Perfect. Brittany's going to be thrilled. Pack light, mostly swimsuits!"

She released him with a wink and closed the door gently behind him as he left
