Looking for some progression advice, particularly related to skills

I've looked up some things online, and there are a lot of mixed messages out there. A lot of the stuff Google throws out there is a bit too nonspecific, so I'm looking for some solid advice about what to focus on early game, and how to progress the skill tree as I go on.
