A case for The Directors Cut Live: A New Year’s Revolution
I’ve been keeping an eye out for a copy of this that was somewhat reasonably priced and I finally found one. Just watched it last night and it was glorious haha, I think it should be in the collection one way or another, even if it was just as a bonus feature on something else
It’s a concert from the avant garde/metal/??? band Fantomas, who got their name from the French villain. It’s a supergroup made up of Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr Bungle), Buzz Osborne (Melvins), Trevor Dunn (Mr Bungle, John Zorn) and Dave Lombardo (Slayer), but for this concert the drummer is Dale Crover (Melvins, early Nirvana).
Here are the reasons I think it should be added
It’s long oop, it took me a while to find a dvd that wasn’t $50+
The editing is hilariously maximalist and perfectly of its time, early 00’s. I was dying laughing throughout the whole thing, its extremely low quality ms paint/clip art special effects have a great charm to them (bloody bullet holes being shot through the tv, bats, dogs, etc)
For how big a deal all those members are, this group is (unsurprisingly) not talked about very much, this and it being long oop makes it seem right up Criterion’s alley
It’s not what you’d expect from a typical concert, it goes hard and soft, spooky and funny, it’s definitely more of an experience to watch compared to the typical concert video, i was crying laughing by the end
I didn’t even realize this until I got it in the mail, but it has an option for expert “commentary” by none other than America’s funny man, Neeeeiiiill Hambuuurgerrr. The concert is barely audible and in a tiny corner of the screen while Neil sits in a disgusting motel room and talks shit about the band and tells you how to look out for bedbugs
And last but not least the concert is them doing their album The Directors Cut, which is all covers and reinterpretations of movie soundtracks. 5 of them are in the collection (Night of the Hunter, Rosemarys Baby, Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, Fire Walk With Me, and Charade) and many more should be (Experiment in Terror, Cape Fear, Der Golem)
It’s only an hour and 8 minutes so I’m not sure if that’s enough to get its own release, but I think it would be cool if it were added into the collection one way or another, I think it being obscure, experimental, oop, borderline outsider art and being based around movies is enough to deserve it a spot
